‘Read and Revitalize’ by Revd Maurice Stafford, volunteer librarian at UTU

You read it first here.  In an article called “The Mind Rewind” 6 different things are listed that people can do to slow down the ageing process and revitalize the brain!!  As it was not in the “Sun” or the “Daily Mail” it may be true.

Here is one of the six.  A study conducted by Yale University School of Public Health has revealed that individuals who engage in regular book reading tend to enjoy a larger lifespan extending their lives by approximately 2 years when compared to those who do not read at all.  Wow!  That is not bad.

But of course, there is still the decision of what to read?  At UTU we have in essence a library of Christian books and those topics linked to that.  Reading about some aspect of the Christian faith and how it connects to life, reading about the Bible and trying to discern its meaning for today, that is deeply worthwhile and life-giving as well as now the extra bonus of two more years!!

At UTU we have thousands of books.  The library has grown over the years through grants, purchases and donations.  The Alan Dale Library is part of it and has many volumes from Genesis to Revelation.  We have books for beginners and also books for those of an academic bent.

In these current times I sense that Christians are having a reawakening of the need to address issues of injustice and oppression, of war and poverty.  It is many years since UTU identified Liberation Theology as a body of work that could give real insight and lead to faithful actions when people were face with varied injustices.

By reading good quality Christian books, it expands the mind, clarifies purpose and resolve and sharpens commitment and service.  Access to Christian resources is limited – Sheffield once had two Christian bookshops where folk could browse and the buy.  Now it has none.

UTU library is open Mondays and Tuesdays from 10.00 – 3.00.  Contact the library through our UTU administrator Jill Wagg and we will get back to you.  We can find the right book for you.
