When I finished my first Theology Degree in 1999 I got a 2:2; not nearly enough to get me onto the Masters course. So I went to see the Professor and made the case; he bought it! I spent a very happy year studying an MTh in Liberation Theology and it was life-changing – I also took a fair bit of time to organise RAG week but that’s a who-o-o-ole other story.

A few years later I was loving being a Secondary school teacher but the academic itch just wouldn’t go away. I decided to study Part-time for a PhD in Indian Liberation Theology. It took me eight years but it was another life-changing process.

I’ve never considered myself academic (anyone who knows me well would vouch for that) but I was persistent and passionate about my subject.

Now I’m on staff at UTU I’ve have the privilege to see a team of supervisors and tutors with both a wealth of experience in adult education but also a commitment to a radically leveling way of bringing people together.

We pray, study, and share life. We grow in discipleship and in academic skill and these are never separate tasks.

If you have ever considered Post-Graduate theology we would love to hear from you. We are holding a taster day on Monday 27th February at the Urban Theology Unit from 11 am to 3 pm. Please get in touch to find out more or register for the event here.

  1. I have a post graduate diploma in continuing education and am a lay pastor in a church in Smethwick in the West Midlands. We have 17 language groups in our church, the largest of which, besides English is Farsi. I am very interested in developing knowledge, understanding and practical ideas on how to develop and grow believers in our suburban environment.

Sheffield is two hours away – is there a possibility of linking with you at a more local level?
Is it possible to take course(s) via distance learning?
What are the projected costs of the course(s)?

    with kind regards
